This is why human \u2018soft skills\u2019 will become increasingly valuable \u2014 skills such as empathy, context sensing, collaboration, and creative thinking.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1eea\">The above statement was made by Lynda Gratton, a <a class=\"bx di mo mp mq mr\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lynda_Gratton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">global expert<\/a> in work organization. For a long time, she&#8217;s focused on reskilling and soft skills training and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7d82\">The <a class=\"bx di mo mp mq mr\" href=\"http:\/\/reports.weforum.org\/future-of-jobs-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Economic Forum<\/a> have made similar statements recently on the future of work. Human beings can still be competitive workers, and will be so long as they continue to develop their &#8220;human&#8221; skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The challenge of developing our human skills<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1640\">However, Gratton highlighted three <em class=\"nm\">small<\/em> obstacles to this in a recent MIT Sloane Management Review <a class=\"bx di mo mp mq mr\" href=\"https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/the-challenge-of-scaling-soft-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c9f9\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1) <strong>we don&#8217;t learn these skills at school<\/strong><\/span> because we&#8217;re stuck with an old curriculum that dates back to the industrial revolution (sit still, memorize information and obey the rules);<br><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2)&nbsp;<strong class=\"mb mn\">technology doesn&#8217;t use soft skills, it eliminates them<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span>(Alexa never \u201cgets offended\u201d);<br><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3)&nbsp;<strong class=\"mb mn\">workplaces create stressful conditions<\/strong><\/span> that stop people from fully developing and using them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The way we learn<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"88e9\">Fortunately there are many human skills training programs out there. They generate over 164 billion euros of revenue each year in the United States alone. Are they useful? Not according to Gratton:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c43f\"><em class=\"nm\">\u201cUnlike many cognitive skills, social skills cannot be learned in a rule-based way \u2014&nbsp;<\/em><strong class=\"mb mn\"><em class=\"nm\">there is no specifiable path to social effectiveness<\/em><\/strong><em class=\"nm\">. Building job-related social skills for a work environment requires an immersive learning experience, rehearsed in situations as close as possible to the real job, with lots of opportunities for practice. This kind of skill development is essentially a process of trial and error, where we behave in a certain way, get feedback through subtle social cues, and try again.&nbsp;<\/em><strong class=\"mb mn\"><em class=\"nm\">Practice creates the muscle of habit<\/em><\/strong><em class=\"nm\">\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"0e2d\">An immersive experience that can recreate reality, with multiple opportunities to apply those skills on a regular basis. <strong class=\"mb mn\">Training programs built in this way would be very expensive. A day in the classroom (or even a week!) would not give us enough time<\/strong> to recreate multiple practice situations to exercise empathy, understand the context and creative thinking. In her article, professor Gratton lists some good emerging practices which use augmented or virtual reality to create micro-training grounds that mimic reality. They provide feedback that generates the awareness necessary for soft skills training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/4050\/1*3oOIbfLGnMB8GgPBtkdS9g.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Life hones our skills<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"46a2\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">But an Italian father has recently published a post on LinkedIn with a decidedly more innovative proposal as compared to the simple use of augmented reality<\/strong>. A communications manager at Italgas, Mirko Cafaro\u2019s post is titled&nbsp;<em class=\"nm\">How being a father made my job \u201ceasier\u201d<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/lifeed.io\/en\/2020\/06\/06\/learning-from-parenthood-increasing-employee-engagement\/\">Mirko found his 10 month-old daughter to be the perfect coach<\/a>. She offers him continuous, immersive practice every day, giving him immediate feedback on 10 soft skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a5c8\">We want to share them with you, as Mirko has written them so clearly and beautifully.&nbsp; So, thank you Mirko for giving us permission to do so:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cb33\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">1) Working under pressure<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>No boss will be able to put you under the same pressure as a little girl who cries and screams because she is hungry. Above all, when the baby bottle or the food always takes way too long to get warm. It&#8217;s Murphy&#8217;s Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"f0a0\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">2) Organization<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparing an outing or an activity away from home is a complex puzzle. There is no check-list or supplier that can prevent you from forgetting something of vital importance (water, milk, diapers, etc.). Corporate events in comparison? All we have to do is implement the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"f2b1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">3) Prevention and intuition<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not always easy to understand and anticipate our bosses&#8217; needs. Children&#8217;s needs are more like a riddle, especially when they cannot speak. We need to use trial and error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2479\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">4) Managing the unexpected<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>How many variables surround a work commitment, a corporate activity, an event. Easy to count? Now see how many more variables there are when we think about a family event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a4fa\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">5) Priority management<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>This point is perhaps the only one that is different from the previous ones, because in this case it is your child who dictates the agenda (in their own way). With the substantial difference that these priorities will be far greater than those of any day at the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"c4d7\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">6) Negotiation<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn\u2019t it easier to get a raise from your boss than a prompt response from a child who is busy watching their favorite cartoon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"f23b\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">7) Improvisation<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>With a little practice, improvisation can be fascinating for any profession. However when you add a child to the mix, it&#8217;s more similar to walking a tightrope &#8211; without a safety net, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3a45\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">8) Precision.<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>No action will ever be distantly comparable to delicately placing your child in bed \u2014 perhaps after having cradled them for a long time \u2014 avoiding any noise or muscle spasm that might awaken them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"d136\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">9) Receiving feedback<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve discover what no feedback means from your child &#8211; either positive or negative &#8211; the same situation in the professional context will have the same scale and impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc70\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong class=\"mb mn\">10) Conflict management<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple children help us to train this skill. For example, try explaining to your daughter that she can&#8217;t forcefully claim everything as hers, even when she tries to affirm her decisions with considerable strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"8369\">In conclusion, Mirko&#8217;s company has the best soft skills training mentor at their full disposal. And that&#8217;s without them knowing it or having to spend a euro! Is there a basis to propose an alternative to AR or VR?
